Meaning
The mantra can be broken down and translated as follows:
- Om: The primordial sound and universal consciousness.
- Tryambakam: Refers to the three-eyed one, Lord Shiva.
- Yajamahe: We worship, honor, or adore.
- Sugandhim: The fragrant one, the one who is virtuous and filled with divine aroma.
- Pushtivardhanam: The one who nourishes and strengthens all beings, bestowing spiritual and physical well-being.
- Urvarukamiva: Like a cucumber (urvaruka) from its stem.
- Bandhanan: From bondage (symbolizing worldly attachments or the cycle of life and death).
- Mrityor: From death.
- Mukshiya: Free us, liberate us.
- Maamritat: Not from immortality (i.e., grant us the nectar of immortality, or let us not fall into the cycle of rebirth).
Full Interpretation
"We meditate on the three-eyed one (Lord Shiva) who permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance. May he free us from the bondage of worldly attachments and the cycle of life and death, granting us liberation and immortality."
This mantra is often recited for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing and is believed to offer protection from untimely death and bestow a long, healthy life.
